Jennifer Vinegar Avery is an art witch, a forager and gardener, a fashion designer, a drag/burlesque poet, a DIY bon vivant, and a graduate of Bristol Community College were they where valedictorian and Brown University, in their thirties and on a full scholarship. They have worked extensively in arts education/empowerment for youth, in production design for theatre, and toured in a punk rock circus from ages 16-24.

Vinegar makes interactive performance pieces using the fantastic detritus of the grotesque/glamorous, whimsical/macabre, and/or attraction/repulsion. They are obsessed with weirdness, vulnerability, and play. They turn garbage into art, art into magic, and empower all folks to do the same.

They also tend to combine 4 aspects in their art:

1. Folklore or fairytales and myths

 2. Queer personal identity and response to trauma

 3. Feminine (not female) labor

4. Critiques of social media and consumer culture

Vinegar was the first American to become an Artist in Residence for the Hermès Foundation in France, where they made a body of performance/instillation work in the Hermès silk factory just outside of Lyon called Pupa, Poubelles et les Bêtes: The Beast Boutique. They performed that body of work all over the world. The New York Times- Japan hailed the work as one of Japan’s top five art exhibitions of 2018.

Despite their luck and occasional academic and art world support Vinegar remains a small town weirdo with dreams of playful anarchy and fabulous organic living.

Paintings made by paranormal investigators and girl scouts. Terrible monsters. Cats and cemeteries, women and demons. Witches, feral children and mother. FRIENDS. Poison gardens, poison colors. Pansies Pansies Pansies. Patchwork. Beautiful nightmares.

Haptic-corporeal experience and knowledge with terpsichorean base notes.

Tapestries, vanities, if you please.

Empathy and chaos
glamour and dirt
attraction and repulsion

Playing dress up as a dress. Playing Dress up as a cat. Playing dress up as a flower. Playing dress up as a doll. Playing dress up as a human.

Repetitive gestures, staged submission.

Vinegar collaborates with their husband, the painter James Allen Swainbank, on many hybrid projects as Gloom Cake.
